How long to process N400 paperwork and become a citizen
My wife is a legal permanent resident and we have been married 6 years (I was born in the US). She would like to apply for citizenship now and we have just ordered the forms we need. How long does it take to fully become a citizen once we file the papers assuming everything is in order? She would like to sponsor a family member for residency but we need her citizenship first and would like to have an idea of time frames.

Depending on the state, it can take anywhere from 6-18 months. for example if you live in GA it can take 6 months, if you are in FL it can take 18 months
I don’t know how long it takes to become a citizen, but here is my experience with the US immgrations. I am US citizen, my husband is Canadian. It took us 1 1/2 years to just get him legal residency here in the US. Most people think just because you are married to a US citizen, you are automatically legal. Well we found out that is not so. I solely could not be a sponsor (not enough income), my mother had to be an additional sponsor. So, 1 1/2 years later and $10,000 later, he is finally a legal resident. Things have really changed since 911. Your best bet is to call a Immgration Attorney. Lots of rules and regulations are involved. Good Luck!
Like thequeen said, it depends on where you live. The larger the immigrant population, usually the longer it takes. Here in St. Louis, Missouri right now the process is going quite fast. Maybe 5 months from the time you apply to the time you have your Oath ceremony. Remember, this interview/exam can be difficult, esp for people with lower English skills. Get a GOOD study guide and PREPARE! Best one I know of the one my wife used can be found at
